SPECIES SEEN
From 3/8/2010 to 3/14/2010 ~ in Anza Trail ~ 78 seen
The number of species shot up this week with migration getting into full swing. We found 78 species along the trail, and 15 more were reported by other birders. Ninety-three species for the week is impressive. This compares with 64 species in 2009, 66 in 2008, and 54 in 2007. The species reported by other birders included, Dusky Flycatcher, Cliff Swallows, Spotted Towhee, Orange-crowned Warbler, Lucy's Warbler, Zone-tailed Hawk, Gray Hawk, Cassin's Kingbird, Townsend's Warbler, House Wren, Savannah Sparrow, Plumbeous Vireo, Crissal Thrasher, Red-naped Sapsucker, and Hepatic Tanager.
The highlights on my list include the beginning of the Common Black-hawk migration, with the first seen on Tuesday by the Tubac birding group, and 3 more on Friday. Others have been reported daily since then. First of season Bullock's Oriole (north of Clark's Crossing) and Warbling Vireo at the Tubac Bridge were spotted.
Early newcomers that are possible this coming week include, Bell's Vireo, Bullock's Oriole, Cassin's Kingbird (already had these last two this week), Pacific-sloped Flycatcher, and White-faced Ibis.
