SPECIES SEEN

From 3/15/2010 to 3/21/2010 ~ in Anza Trail ~ 71 seen

The weekly list of birds seen and heard along the Anza Trail, includes 71 species, that compares with 70 in 2009, and 75 in both 2008 and 2007.  In addition, 6 other species were reported by other birders, including Ring-billed Gull, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Northern Beardless-tyrannulet, Mountain Bluebird, and Black-throated Gray Warbler.  I did not get to the Rio Rico section of the trail this week, which may account for the Mountain Bluebird being missing from the list.

Of special interest from the list, is the first of season (FOS) Bell's Vireo heard south of Clark's Crossing.  Also, Gray Hawks were heard calling at the Tubac bridge and north of Clark's Crossing, Cassin's Kingbird were seen on the wires at the Tubac bridge, and Lucy's Warblers are widely distributed.

I have tried to keep track of the number of Common Black-hawks passing in the vicinity of Tubac bridge.  From personal observation, and verbal and written reports from other birders, it appears that 82 were seen last week.  There were 18 Zone-tailed Hawks reported as well.  I would expect that the numbers of black-hawks would begin to drop sharply this week, though zone-taileds might increase.

FOS possible this week are Swainson's Hawk, MacGillvray's Warbler, Warbling Vireo (already seen), and Western Kingbird.
