SPECIES SEEN

From 3/22/2010 to 3/28/2010 ~ in Anza Trail ~ 77 seen

It was a short week for me on  the trail due to the arrival of family for a visit.  Despite the loss of focus, 77 species were located along the Anza Trail this week.  This compares with 75 in 2009, 68 in 2008, and 66 in 2007.  Much of the credit for the solid number of species belongs to the Tuesday AM Tubac group (19 strong this week) that found 61 species for the day.    Other birders reported 2 additional species, Varied Thrush and Black-throated Gray Warbler at Santa Gertrudis.

The highlights for the week included 2 first ever for me along the Anza Trail, a group of 5 Ring-billed Gulls seen Tuesday flying over, and a Steller's Jay seen about 1/2 mile south of Clark's Crossing.  A couple of Rufous Hummingbirds  and a Northern Beardless-tyrannulet were found a little north of Clark's Crossing.  There were no reports of Common Black-hawks that I recall, and 1 Zone-tailed Hawk was seen.  It would appear that the hawk migration for 2010 on the Santa Cruz is grinding to an  end.

There are no new first of season arrivals to be expecxted this coming week according to my records.
