SPECIES SEEN

From 3/29/2010 to 4/4/2010 ~ in Anza Trail ~ 66 seen

It was another short week on the trail due to visitors, but 66 species were seen.  Unfortunately, I missed the Tuesday morning Tubac group walk and lost the benefit of all those eyes for spotting birds.  In the same week in 2009 82 species were seen, compared to 72 in 2008 and 2007.  Birds not on the list but seen by other birders were American Goldfinch, Marsh Wren, Common Black-hawk (1), and Zone-tailed Hawk (2).

The highlights included the first of season birds, Swainson's Hawk (Rio Rico), Bell's Vireo (almost anywhere), Barn Swallow (Rio Rico), and Black-chinned Hummingbird (north of Clark's Crossing).  An American Coot was seen on the borrow pit pond, and an Orange-crowned Warblers, a scarce commodity this season, were seen in a couple of places.

The new arrivals that might be expected this week include the Black-headed Grosbeak, Brown-crested Flycatcher, and Summer Tanager.
