SPECIES SEEN
From 4/26/2010 to 5/2/2010 ~ in Anza Trail ~ 71 seen
The number of species per week it dipping slightly as migration moves past its peak. This week 71 species were found along the Anza Trail in Santa Cruz County. That compares with 44 in 2009 (left town before the week was over), 73 in 2008, and 61 in 2007. The totals each year for the month of April are fairly steady. In 2010 the total was 108, in 2009 111, in 2008 104, and in 2007 99.
The highlights for the week include the SEEN Yellow-breasted Chat, and the return in numbers of the Brown-crested Flycatcher. I spotted 2 Western Tanagers this morning for the first of season, though as I write this it is May 3rd and beyond the week covered by the list. Still no sign of MacGillivray's Warbler or Western Wood-pewee. In the coming week or so the Swainson's Thrush and the Varied Bunting should make an appearance.
This will be the last report for a while. For the next few months I will travel, and spend more time exploring birding areas away from the Anza Trail. Hopefully these reports have been useful. Later!
