SPECIES SEEN

From 11/30/09 to 12/06/09 ~  63

Sixty-three species were seen or heard along the trail this week, that compares with 51 in 2008 and 50 in 2007.  Several notables this week.  A flock of 92 American White Pelicans were seen circling above the open field west of the sewage treatment plant south of Bridge Rd.  Their black and white against a perfectly blue sky made for a sight to remember.  A Varied Thrush was seen on the mudflats in the river just north of Santa Gertrudis Lane, a life bird for me.  Soras have returned to the borrow pit and will sometimes respond to clapping.  I finally saw the Crissal Thrasher along Santa Gertrudis Lane.  The Rio Rico walk produced numerous Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Mountain and Western Bluebirds, several Snipe at the Rio Rico ponds, and the first Rufous-crowned Sparrow of the season.  Dark-eyed Juncos are being seen regularly in different locations along the trail, and that is unusual.
