SPECIES SEEN
12/1/08 to 12/7/2008

This week 51 species were sighted along the Anza Trail.  Last year, for the same 7 day period, the number was 45; and in 2006 it was 36.  For the week before, the numbers for 2007 and 2008 were the same 53 species.  The highlights included a Peregrine Falcon sitting in a tree about 200 yards north of Rio Rico Rd. just off the trail.  The bird let me get pretty close before he departed a short distance north, but I did not spot it again.

About 3/4 of the way up to the cow pens at the golf resort from Bridge Rd., there was a waterthrush. I've recorded it on this report as a Louisana Waterthrush because more of its markings indicated that, but I would not be shocked if it was really a Northern Waterthrush.

A ten second look at the side of the bird showing a white breast, darkly striped, with a sharp demanding,non-metalic chip note, and sitting on a branch two feet above a rapidly moving Santa Cruz River were my clues.  Maybe you can find it and verify or repudiate my identification.
