SPECIES SEEN
From 2/4/2008 to 2/10/2008 ~ 57 seen
Fifty-seven species were found along the trail this week. That is an average number for this winter, with sixty-five last week being the highest so far.
The highlights include Western Bluebirds and a lone American Pipit seen where the trail crosses the short grass of the golf club.
The Spotted Towhee was found at Clark's Crossing, and a flock of Yellow-headed Blackbirds were congregating on the ranch land at the entrance to the trail at the east end of Tubac.
Both the Rufous-crowned and Rufous-winged Sparrows were located in the "grassy" areas well south of Barrio de Tubac.
Very light breasted American Robins were sighted in two different places.
There are signs of spring along the trail. The Lesser Goldfinches have flocked to the tops of the budding cottonwood trees. The Bewick's Wrens and Song Sparrows have started to sing. Also, some of the Bridled Titmice are abandoning their chickadee like chatter for their spring song.
Please don't ask me to describe the song, but I do know it when I hear it.
Missing for the past couple of weeks is the Greater Pewee that has been singing south of Barrio de Tubac all fall and winter.
