SPECIES SEEN
From 3/17/2008 to 3/23/2008 ~  74 seen

It was a good week on the trail with 74 species in this report, and 7 others reported by other birders and listed below . On Tuesday, a group of 40 Tucson Audubon birders, half going north from Tubac and half going south, reported seeing 9 Common Black-hawks. That surprisingly high number was followed on Wednesday by a group of 3 birders standing at the intersection of Frontage Rd. and Bridge Rd. in Tubac reporting 42 Common Black-hawks in little over an hour.

My numbers were much more modest, but they were seen almost daily. The hawks were probably backed up by the north winds from the cold front passing through last weekend when the winds shifted to the south, they came pouring through. There were also several Zone-tailed Hawks migrating through, and numerous Gray Hawks have taken up residence all along the trail.

The first Bell's Vireos were seen and heard on Monday, and the first Cassin's Vireo on Tuesday. A few Cassin's Kingbirds have returned, and a lone Hooded Oriole was seen just off the trail in Tubac on the Tuesday morning bird walk.

In addition to the birds listed here, other birders reported seeing a Peregrine Falcon, Hutton's and Warbling Vireos, Black-chinned Hummingbird, and Nashville, Yellow and Lucy's Warblers. Rufous-winged Sparrows have begun singing, with a few introductory notes and then trilling like a Chipping Sparrow.
