SPECIES SEEN
From 4/14/2008 to 4/20/2008 ~  73 seen

There were 73 species spotted along the trail this past week. There is a changing of the guard afoot. As the weather warms, the wintering sparrows decrease in numbers and species. Only the Chipping and Lark Sparrows were seen in numbers. At the same time the numbers and species of flycatchers are increasing with10 species seen last week. A Canyon Towhee was found on Tuesday morning in Tubac near the trail, only the third time I have seen one in the vicinity of the trail.

A flock of about 50 White-faced Ibis were seen flying north along the trail. The colorfulness of the birds present continues to grow. Added to the ever spectacular Vermilion Flycatchers and the Summer Tanagers, were the first of season Black-headed Grosbeak (behind Santiago in Barrio de Tubac section of the trail),and the Lazuli Bunting (north of the burned area). A great Egret was seen flying north toward Clark's Crossing. By the way, Clark's Crossing is a mess for birding at the moment with dump trucks rolling in and out carrying fill. A little late, but Wilson's Warblers are being seen everywhere along the trail.  ~Jim Karp
