September 2011

Workshops
September 24, 2011 - 8 am to noon - Guy Tobin Memorial Anza Trailhead
Although we did get a few plants in the ground Saturday the 10th, the majority still need a hole to call home, so we're having the second installment of the planting workshop Saturday, September 24th.  We'll be starting at 8am and wrapping up by noon again, and we'll provide the water and refreshments if you provide your labor, sun protection, a reusable water bottle and close-toed shoes.
Trailhead location: off i-19 take exit 17 - Yavapai Drive, go east over the freeway to Rio Rico Drive, the trailhead is 300 yards on the left.  Hosted by the Watershed Management Group with volunteers from Friends of the Santa Cruz River, Anza Trail Coalition, Friends of Las Lagunas and heavy equipment and other facilities contributed by Rio Rico Properties.

September 10, 2011 - 8 am to noon - Guy Tobin Memorial Anza Trailhead
We will be planting native trees and shrubs in the waterharvesting features we fine-tuned at our last workshop July 16th.  These plants will enhance this great community asset by creating nice shady spots along the Anza Trail, providing habitat for native birds and other wildlife, reducing erosion, improving the quality of stormwater entering the Santa Cruz River, and virtually eliminating the need for supplemental irrigation for landscaping once the plants are established.

October 2010

October 9, 2010 - Visit the Anza Historic Expedition Campsite #13 in Nogales for a "First Look" at the historic lagoon

October 16, 2010 - Tubac celebrates 35th Annual Anza Days - Experience "History in Motion" from 9 to 5 around the entire Village!

The streets of Tubac came alive this year with a break from tradition of past Anza Days, celebrating the many aspects of Tubac’s history.  In the Tubac village, the Pascua Yaqui tribe shared cultural exchanges, street theatre re-enactments entertained us along with the Nogales Mariachi Apaches, Lourdes School Ballet Folklorico, and kicking off the festivites was the Rio Rico High School Marching Hawks. The Tucson Presidio Garrison added to the spectacle with musket demonstrations and stories of the Spanish soldadoIn the Presidio, the grounds were astir with living history re-enactors, musical performances and Plein Air paint out.

One special highlight of the celebration is not only a tradition but colorful as well; the horseback re-enactment ride of Anza’s arrival in Tubac.

The Anza Day celebration is sponsored by the Tubac Historical Society, Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona, Tubac Rotary, Tubac Chamber of Commerce and the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park.

Rio Rico High School Marching Hawks kicked off the event with an around town blast!

Below, the Lourdes Catholic School wooped it up on center stage with multiple dance routines in their beautiful and colorful costumes for all of us to envy.

A Lesson in Making Moonshine Mescal

Mescal was a popular drink with miners and ranchers during Prohimbition in the 1920s.  The main ingredient was Agave Americana and it is still abundant on the slopes of the Santa Rita mountains.

The Perils of Inez Gonzales

Inez Gonzales was kidnapped by Apaches in 1850 while enroute to the festival of San Francisco in Magdalena, about 75 miles from her family home in Santa Cruz, Sonora.  She was subsequently traded to a group of Mexican traders who then encountered the Boundary Commission surveying the proposed new border stipulated by the Gadsden Purchase.  Commissioner John Russell Bartlett rescued Inez, and through many hardships, returned her to her home and family in 1851.

Baca Float is not an Ice Cream Drink

The story of the parcel of land called Baca Floart No. 3 is complex, full of legal maneuvering, and heartbreak.  Below the sordid tale was told how it unwittingly preserved some of the finest 18th c. Spanish colonial ruins.

The Mowry-Cross Incident

In the early days of Territorial Arizona (1854-1912) the strongly opposing views of two Tubac men led to a confrontation with Burnside rifles.  Sylvester Mowry, army officer, mine owner, Casanova, and tireless Arizona promoter and Edward Cross, a down-to-earth newspaperman and editor of Arizona's first newspaper, The Weekley Arizonian, faced each other on the mroning of June 8, 1859 to settle their differences of opinion.
