ANZA DAYS 2009

Marana Anza Days Fall Heritage Festival

On October 28, 1775 Captain Anza departed from Puerta del Azotado, campsite #19.  In Marana we celebrated Anza Days on October 24th, 2009.

More than 700 people showed up at the Heritage River Park on Oct. 24 to celebrate the Marana Fall Harvest Festival.  Visitors were treated to a day of family fun and music, including the Los Potrillos Mariachi Band from Tucson’s Cholla High School.  Parks and Recreation Director Tom Ellis was part of a presentation celebrating Juan Bautista de Anza’s trek through Southern Arizona to colonize Northern California. Ellis played the role of Father Pedro Font, who was responsible for the spiritual life of the approximately 300 people who took part in the colonizing expedition.  Don Garate portrayed Captain Anza, Joe Myers from Pinal county a Soldados.  Also shown is Joyce Rychener and one of her students who sang beautifully for us.
